Helping Your Child Make Friends and Supporting Their Social Development

Join us for this FREE live and interactive webinar and support group: Helping Your Child Make Friends and Supporting their Social Development.

Good social skills allow kids to enjoy better peer relationships. Parents play an important role in fostering these skills. In this live and interactive webinar, parents will learn strategies to help children:

  • Make and keep friends
  •  Understand social rules
  • Learn to be empathetic
  • Learn to assert themselves and avoid fights
  • Develop conversation and communication skills
  • Learn to follow expected behaviours.

Participants can expect to receive information in the first half of the session, with the second half devoted to discussion, resource sharing and collaboration amongst participants. For those who would like to continue the discussion and receive more tailored support, there will be an opportunity to join one of CanLearn’s free support groups.

CanLearn Friends – Now Online for Schools!

The CanLearn Friends program was initially developed as an in-school program for children in grades 4-6 to help them manage their emotions, strengthen their relationships, and improve their behaviour. In response to the COVID-19 pandemic and social distancing measures, we wanted to find a way to work with kids on these essential skills. We are excited to announce that we will be offering the Friends program VIRTUALLY to schools!

Registration for FALL 2021 is now open!

Over the course of 8-weeks children will be provided with an engaging and interactive learning experience and will learn and practice skills related to:

  • Making and keeping friends
  • Coping with anxiety and worry
  • Managing their emotions
  • Communicating well with others
  • Thinking positively
  • Problem-solving
  • Dealing with bullying
  • Relaxation and mindfulness
  • Self-confidence
  • Supporting expected behaviours

Up to 8 one-hour sessions will be offered to each school (weekly or bi-weekly). There are a limited number of spots for this program, and they will be offered on a first-come, first-serve basis. Since facilitators are conducting sessions virtually, the program requires a school staff member to be present in the classroom to assist with facilitating the sessions.

Who can participate? Teacher nominated students in grades 4-6 identified with learning, attention and social-emotional challenges.

Cost: FREE

Dates and Times: Determined by the school and program facilitator

To reserve a spot for your school, please contact the Program Coordinator, Jaime Gaber, at (403) 686-9300 (Ext 167) or email: [email protected]

CanLearn Friends is a FREE program made possible through a partnership between the CanLearn Society and FCSS (Family and Community Support Service, City of Calgary).
